How to reach 20k steps walked each day (especially in the cold)

“It’s too cold…”

“I’m in a hurry…”

“I don’t have a hat…”

“No time for that…”

Stop it with the excuses, put your two feet forward, and start taking those extra steps in your day!

When it’s cold and dreary outside, the last thing that probably comes to your mind is leaving the house. Chilling out all wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket with a hot cup of tea while you watch Netflix may sound tempting. Trust me, I’m not fond of cold temperatures either. However, when you live in it, you really have no other choice but to weather the daily conditions with a positive attitude and carry on as if it has no effect on your day!

SMART & SAVVY WAYS TO REACH 20K STEPS

Whether you reside in a cold climate or a warmer one, there are many ways to ramp up daily activity and add 20K extra steps to your day.  Here are some inspiring ways to rack up your daily mileage, get a little sweat, and burn extra calories.

Park far to move more

Parking far away not only provides more steps, but it helps burn more calories and can be a great way to get fresh winter air.

Bundle up & hit the trails

Going for leisure walks or runs outside can be uplifting.  Just be sure to wear the appropriate clothing to keep your body warm.

Walk the dog

What better way to get some outdoor exercise for you and your best furry friend!  It’s a win-win for all to get outside and walk.

Grab groceries & go the distance

There are ways to make grocery shopping an adventure, especially if you live in a large city or a town. This might be a long shot for some, but parking a few blocks away from your local grocery store could turn into an active adventure! (Or at least make you feel like you’re living in the city)

It also allows you to buy food you really need rather than stocking up on a bunch of processed snacks! Whatever you buy, you have to carry it back to your house or car! So, keep your bag weights to a minimum.

Take the stairs

You’re probably familiar with this one, but who needs an elevator when you can take the stairs? Yes, this takes effort, but why not try to when you can? It not only revs up your heart rate but it also burns more calories and tones your legs and glutes!

Walk the escalator

There’s nothing lazier to me than seeing escalator loitering.  Just standing there takes double the time ride to the top!  There are those exceptions to hang out and enjoy the ride such as carrying luggage, strollers, or an injury, but if you’re not in this category, start stepping those moving stairs to get the extra steps.

Fitbit or other apps

There are so many savvy ways to monitor your daily steps taken and activity expenditure. A Fitbit or a wellness/ fitness app helps calculate average steps taken, accumulated mileage, calories burned, sleep patterns, and more. These devices allow you to stay focused on your goals, keep you on track and motivated to be more active.

There are many fitness/ wellness apps that can help track daily activity. Start exploring the possibilities and download one that appeals to you!

Home workout

Get motivated by listening to your favorite tunes and create a workout in the comfort of your home!

Workout to your favorite video

Plug in an old workout DVD, watch one on demand, or download a video from the Internet to sweat it out at home! This allows you to move and be told what to do rather than rely on your own creativity.

Home treadmill or gym access

If you have access to a treadmill at home or belong to a gym, whether it’s a long walk, jog, or quick run, be sure to dedicate some extra time to add steps to your day!

No matter where you live during the winter season, try to make the most of everyday by keeping a positive outlook and eagerness to achieve great things. Do your best to keep up with a healthy diet, engage in regular exercise, and keep your body mobile. The more active you are, the stronger, healthier, and happier you will be.

Watch your activity mileage multiply by the extra effort you make to go the distance daily.

Best Always,
