Improve Your Golf Game with Total Gym

Congrats to Shane Lowry for winning The British Open golf tournament and final PGA Major of the year. It was the first time in 70 years that The Open was held in Ireland so for an Irishman to win it was epic. Quick, buy stock in Guinness as I can only guess the entire country is celebrating in full force!

As summer winds down and our attention turns from golf to football, this blog gives you an awesome golf-centric workout to focus on in the off-season. It will help you hit the ball farther with added strength in all the right areas. This routine will also improve your consistency and accuracy as I have mixed in flexibility aspects to open up your hips, back, and shoulders which will make it easier get the club face square at impact.

One of the great benefits of staying fit on your Total Gym is the convenience of working out in the comfort of your own home. So you can improve your health, your golf game, and watch football at the same time! What better way to multi-task?

I’ve made this workout simple yet multi-faceted. It is simple as there are only three segments and multi-faceted as each exercise targets more than one physical aspect that will benefit your golf game and your body.

Let’s dig right in so you get a grasp of what I demonstrate in the video:

Lower Body:

  • Squat with figure four hip stretch and oblique crunch - A 3 for 1 special that will strengthen your lower body for a more powerful leg drive through your golf swing. This will increase club head speed and thus distance. The figure four stretch opens up the hips to increase your range of motion. Finally, the crunch strengthens your obliques, those muscles responsible for twisting the body which are crucial in the golf swing.
  • Single leg ply-metric jumps - adding explosive power to your lower body.
  • Superman - a great low back strengthener that will reduce fatigue and allow you to hold your proper spine angle all the way to the 19th hole.

  • Upper Body:
  • Surfer Lat Pull - One of my client’s favorites! A dynamic exercise that strengthens and stretches all the back muscles and core. It also challenges your balance and proprioception which are important qualities of any good athlete.
  • Kneeling Biceps Curls - Balance work again and strengthening for your biceps, forearms, and wrists.
  • Triceps Extension with Low Back Strengthener - You’ll love the balance component and keeping your arms pumped to fill out your golf shirt!
  • Core Golf Grip - If you love golf this is a must have accessory for your Total Gym. I show just two exercises with this awesome tool, but it comes with a whole workout routine and costs less than one golf lesson with your local pro: Total Gym Golf Core Grip Workout System .

The exercise I show is my favorite - Oblique Rotation with Grip/Wrist Joint Strengthening - This beauty stretches your back, spine and shoulder complex for maximum trunk rotation during your swing. It also makes your forearms and wrists stronger and reinforces a proper neutral grip.

  • Enjoy this simple yet powerful routine and watch your handicap go down and your health quotient go up! As always, keep in touch as I’d love to hear feedback and respond to any questions or comments.
